One of the best movies/series I have ever seen; the story is epic and well-told, and the acting and cinematography are fantastic.

What I liked best was the ambivalent nature of all of the main characters, not the two-dimensional cardboard cut-outs typically encountered in movies (and series). Shaka, while certainly a great leader, warrior, and king, is also certainly an utterly ruthless, blood-stained tyrant; this production does an amazing job of illustrating these and other facets of the man. As other reviewers note, Henry Cele was just amazing in this role.

The English characters were also portrayed well; the leader, Lt. Farewell, is depicted as a well-intentioned rogue seeking ivory, but ultimately his relationship with Shaka changes him. Normally he might not be a very sympathetic character, but compared to the British colonial officials in Capetown, he is practically a paragon of wisdom and virtue. The Scottish doctor meanwhile attempts with rather limited success to school Shaka in the tenents of the Christian faith–Shaka has a way of turning all of the doctor’s earnest efforts completely backwards.

Finally, a comment about the large portion of the series devoted to Shaka’s birth and childhood–it is Shakespeare and Greek tragedy rolled into one–prophecies, witchcraft, parricide, regicide, vengeance, love, war, etc. Very very interesting.

When Nandi and her unborn child are saved by the ancient witch doctor, he proclaims: “A force has been generated that in time will rock the foundation of the African sub-continent.”

Indeed the prophecy shaped the event and Shaka was the ruthless founder of southern Africa’s Zulu Empire… In less than a decade, the paramount chieftain of the Zulu clan revolutionized the techniques of tribal warfare and fashioned an efficient and terrifying fighting force that devastated the entire region…

Set against the emergence of British power in Africa during the early 19th Century, the film provides some valuable insights into comparative cultures…

Shaka (Henry Cele) is a man of considerable height, thin, with athletic body and white teeth who can read and write… He is a great warrior, tactically, strategically and physically… He rearms his army with a long-bladed, short-shafted stabbing spear, which forced them to fight at close quarters… He goes for extermination, incorporating the remnants of the clans he smashed into the Zulu, making it increase with numbers and power..

The Mini-Series begins with a letter to the British king (George IV) regarding the Zulus’ potential threat to the Cape Colony… In an attempt to intimidate Shaka into an alliance with the British empire, the Secretary of War sends a delegation to inner African to meet with the fearful warrior…

We see :

- The meeting of Nandi, an orphaned princess of the neighboring Langeni clan and Senzangakona, the chief of the then small Zulu tribe… They are instantly attracted to each other… Nandi becomes pregnant, at the same time as Kona’s wife, but the marriage did not last… Their marriage violated Zulu custom, and the stigma of this extended to the child…

- The couple separated when Shaka was six, and Nandi took her son back to the Langeni, where he passed a fatherless boyhood among a people who despised his mother and made him the butt of endless cruel pranks… He grew up to be bitter and angry, hating his tormentors… The Langeni drove Nandi out, and she finally found shelter with the Dletsheni, a subclan of the powerful Mtetwa…

- Shaka ruled with an iron hand from the beginning, distributing instant death for the slightest opposition…

- While en route to Shaka’s capital, the crew’s doctor saves a girl who is in a coma and nearly buried alive by her tribe… Impressed by both the deed and their horses, Shaka agrees to meet with the crew… And so begins the clash of two cultures, two different worlds…

- Shaka, seriously wounded for saving an unknown warrior (King Dingiswayo), is nursed to health by a beautiful Mtwetwa girl…

- Shaka, believing in total annihilation, joins the Mtwetwa army and creates a dangerous weapon for the African warfare…

- Shaka grants Port Natal, with its ivory rights, to the British crew after he is saved by the crew’s doctor from an assassination attempt…

- Shaka’s mighty army saving the British delegation in a battle against thousands of Ndwandwe warriors… To test the alliance and allegiance of the British delegation, Shaka orders them into battle alone against the Ndwandwe warriors…

- With his mother’s death Shaka becomes openly psychotic… Thousands are killed in the initial paroxysm of his grief…

- Shaka rules by the sheer force of his personality, building, by scores of daily executions, a fear so profound that he could afford to ignore it…

Set against the spectacular panorama of the Zulu tribal homelands, and with graphic violence and frequent nudity, “Shaka Zulu” is a tremendous epic Mini-Series, chronicling the rise and fall of one of the most famous South Africans who has already passed into legend…

Don’t judge the product based on the reviews slamming it for the missing narration. That was a flaw in the original release and it has been FIXED, so order with a light heart and get ready to enjoy some scary paranormal accounts with surprisingly good acting.

The faulty product is distinguishable from the good product by the color of the letter “A” on the packaging. The original release with the bad audio has a yellow “A”, while the fixed version has a red “A”. If you have the old product, contact Timeless Media Group for a replacement.

I was excited to get this dvd set. I popped it in the player and I thought my audio was messed up. The spooky narrator was silent and the shows started silent and didnt make sense. I thought I better check Amazon to see the latest details. Come to find out, the company forgot to put the narrator in. I dont really know how you can forget something like that but thats anther story. I emailed the company and the told me to send it back and they’ll send out a copy within a week. What a inconvenience. Im so sick of buying defective products then having to go to the post office to mail them back to the sellers. Plus I have to wait an extra two weeks (with shipping) just to watch the show. The show is good but its unrealistic and feels more like a cheaply made horror movie sans the gore. I do enjoy some of the shows they’ve had and I love the narrator of the show, probably second best to Robert Stack. I recommend this show to people who like Unsolved Mysteries, only if they wished the program was extended by forty minutes or more. The dvd is pretty bare and looks like it was made for pretty cheap. Probably the reason why the was narrator left out. It is good for a scare or two though.

I warmly recommend this DVD for anybody who wants to know more about crop circles. It is a thorough and cool-headed overview of the various aspects of this amazing phenomenon, and it also contains many beautiful shots of many of the most striking crop circles of recent years.

Don’t miss the DVD Extras! Some of the best material is in there, including much evidence of a big orchestrated campaign to discredit the phenomenon of crop circles as a mere hoax in the public eye.

Film maker William Gazecki does a fantastic job, and I am looking forward to whatever he does next.

“We’re being forced to consider that this universe has all kinds of intelligences all around us that we’ve been ignoring…mysterious other intelligences.” – From the DVD

Buy,Download, Or Stream Crop Circles – Quest for Truth! Click Here

Director William Gazecki highlights the science and art of crop circles in his 120 minute DVD Crop Circles: Quest for Truth. This levelheaded DVD interviews crop circle expert Colin Andrews as well as scientists and crop circle enthusiasts.

Before 1990, crop circles were simple and scattered. However, as time went on, they became increasingly complex in the form of insectograms, fractals, and other geometric patterns. In fact, at the crux of sacred geometry and crop circles is the Golden Mean, which is a ratio of “small to the large is large to the whole”.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Crop Circles – Quest for Truth! Click Here

Interviewees relate fascinating stories of crop circle sightings, including seeing infamous glowing balls that often float around the circles. For example, Andrews relays a story about flying over Stonehenge, photographing the stones, then going back to refuel the plane. On his way back-a mere 25 minutes later-there was a spiral crop circle amidst Stonehenge…in broad daylight!

There’s a liberal amount of science in the Crop Circles: Quest for Truth DVD. For example, scientists discuss how seeds from crop circle plants grow differently than the control group. According to one scientist, there had to be some kind of strong energy-perhaps microwave-pulse or plasma energy–to turn parts of full-grown corn into “exploded nodes”.

One fascinating account told of 109 circles made one rainy night-with nary a broken plant, footprint, or trail!

While hoaxsters make some crop circles, the question that many have is at 200+ crop circles every year, what is the payoff? No money is involved and supposed hoaxsters remain largely anonymous.

There are tons of extras in Crop Circles: Quest for Truth, including:

* Colin Andrews talks about the CIA (He says that they tried to get him to say it’s all a hoax)

* Mysterious magnetic particles left at the scene of circles

* Military helicopters arriving at the same time as the balls of light

* Extensive photo gallery of hundreds of crop circles

* Interview with the director

The best part of this DVD, in my opinion, is the jaw-dropping crop circles in the photo gallery. Whether made by man or something else, there’s no denying that these beautiful displays of organic art touch the soul and evoke feelings of wonder. A nice mix of science, speculation, experience, and intriguing footage, Crop Circles: Quest for Truth is a great DVD for those interested in the crop circle phenomenon. The crop circle photo gallery alone is well-worth the price!

This is a GREAT collection to own and a must have for any Lucy fan! With this collection you will receive 5 movies starring Lucille Ball’s most popular film adaption. You will be amazed to see the true acting ability of Lucy here.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dance, Girl, Dance! Click Here

Some of the films here are somewhat of a opposite to Lucille Ball’s role on “I Love Lucy” but some are very similar to “I Love Lucy” in my opinion. Take “The Big Street” for instance, High class Gloria (Lucille Ball) was a bit cruel and mean to a poor man named pinks who falls head over heels in love with her and will do anything to please her at the end she begins to fall for him too. A must see dramatic film!!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dance, Girl, Dance! Click Here

You will see Lucille Ball like you have never seen her before and these movies are not boring at all but they are really good interesting movies that you will not lose interest in. I am somewhat shy of old films and find them boring but I can watch anything with Lucille Ball and you will love these films!

“Lucille Ball Film Collection” includes:

“The Big Street” – Ex-chanteuse Gloria is vain, cruel, crippled – and busboy Pinks can’t help but love her. Ball and Henry Fonda power Damon Runyon’s tale of Broadway denizens living on life’s margins.

“Critic’s Choice” – That’s no playwright, that’s my wife. Poison-penned Broadway critic Bob Hope loves wife Lucille Ball…but hates the play she writes. Based on the play by “Deathtrap’s” Ira Levin.

Dance, Girl, Dance” – Art doesn’t pay the bills. So aspiring ballerina Ball makes her way as a burlesque star in this powerful study of being a woman in a man’s world. With Maureen O’Hara.

“Dubarry Was A Lady” – Their friendship is a perfect musical-comedy blendship! Ball goes from NYC torch singer to the dream girl of Red Skelton’s wacky, 18th-century-France reverie. Gene Kelly joins the fun!

“Mame” – She’ll coax the blues right out of your heart. Madcap Auntie Mame (Ball) is suddenly her nephew’s guardian. Robert Preston and Beatrice Arthur co-star in a sparkling adaptation of the Broadway hit.

Highly recommended!!!

Fine drama directed by a gay woman—Dorothy Arzner—examines women’s roles in society and how men perceive them and what it means to follow your dream. Maureen O’Hara is lustrous as Judy, a struggling dancer in a knock about all girl dance troup who longs to dance in ballet. Also in the troop is Bubbles (Lucille Ball) who just longs for the Big Time and any road will do to get there. While Judy is sweet, sincere and wants to use her talent for success, Bubbles is raw and vulgar and uses sex to get what she wants. When Bubbles (now Tiger Lily White) lands in burlesque she gets Judy a job to dance ballet in come-on spots between her strip acts knowing Judy is just her “stooge”. Judy reluctantly agrees to suffer for her art. Complicating things are a wealthy married playboy (Louis Hayward) and a ballet entrepeneur (Ralph Bellamy) who sees a star in Judy. O’Hara is lovely and has a great scene telling off the rowdy burlesque audience. And Ball as Bubbles/Tiger Lily is wonderful playing a bad girl with “pay me” on her forehead. This film is a keeper and offers a great b&w DVD print. And it’s interesting to note the feminist angles, unusual for the time. Highly recommended.

“Desperate Housewives” made its debut in 2004 to rave reviews and high Nielsen ratings. Season one of the show is considered a modern classic. For most people, the same couldn’t be said for seasons two and three. Many people though the second and third seasons were disappointing. I thought the second season was good (though not great), and the third season was a slight improvement over season two (though it still didn’t top the first season). But after watching the entire fourth season of “Desperate Housewives”, the show is back on track. This is the best season since the first.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Desperate Housewives: The Complete Fourth Season! Click Here

Season four of the show about those housewives from the fictional Wisteria Lane (located in the town of Fairview) was the most interesting, most intriguing, and most entertaining season since season one. Many of the same major characters are back: Susan, Lynette, Bree, Gabrielle, Edie, Mike, Carlos, Tom, Orson, and narrator Mary Alice. But what really makes the fourth season of “Desperate Housewives” so great is the addition of a new character: Katherine Mayfair. As season four begins, we find out that Katherine used to live on Wisteria Lane many years ago but has now moved back to the neighborhood with her much younger husband Adam and daughter Dylan. And yes, we can tell from the first episode that Katherine is hiding a deep dark secret that will eventually unfold as the season progresses. Some of the other major storylines throughout season four include: Lynette battling cancer (which she discovered late in season three); Susan (after marrying Mike at the end of season three) finds out that she’s pregnant; Bree faking a pregnancy to protect daughter Danielle’s real pregnancy; Mike developing a drug problem when he becomes addicted to pills; Gabrielle finding marriage to town mayor Victor Lang to be so dull that she starts having an affair with ex-husband Carlos; and probably the biggest story of the year, Wisteria Lane being destroyed by a tornado.

That tornado episode, titled “Something’s Coming” (episode #9), was easily the best episode of the season and the second best episode overall (the very best episode of “Desperate Housewives” still remains that supermarket hostage crisis episode from season three). This was reportedly the most expensive episode of “Desperate Housewives” to date, obviously since special effects played a big part in it. But just like that supermarket hostage episode, it’s a thrilling and entertaining episode that keeps you on the edge of your seat as you wonder who will come out of it alive or dead.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Desperate Housewives: The Complete Fourth Season! Click Here

The stars of this show once again do a great job just as they have in the previous three seasons. Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, Eva Longoria Parker, and Nicolette Sheridan are fine as usual, but in season four they get upended by the newcomer to Wisteria Lane. Two-time Emmy winner Dana Delany (”China Beach”) is an absolute standout as Katherine Mayfair. There’s an interesting back-story involving Delany and “Desperate Housewives” when the show’s creator Marc Cherry was casting the principal roles back in 2004. Cherry originally offered Delany the role of Bree, but turned it down since she claimed it was too similar to a role she had on a short-lived TV series she starred on a few years earlier (that show was called “Pasadena”, which aired on FOX). But Cherry never gave up on her. After he created new character Katherine he wanted Delany for the part, and this time she accepted. It’s interesting because Katherine is kind of like Bree, but only darker. And Delany stepped right into the role of Katherine and made it her own. I think this was similar to what Cherry and the rest of the “Desperate Housewives” writers were trying to do two years ago when they created the Betty Applewhite character for season two and failed miserably. This time they got it right, and the writers should be congratulated for not messing up the Katherine Mayfair storyline. This was an intriguing storyline throughout season four, and it ends perfectly in the final episode. And what makes it even better, Delany’s Katherine will be back next season.

My only complaint about “Desperate Housewives: The Complete Fourth Season” is that the season was shorter than usual. You can blame that on all the writers from the small screen to the big screen for going on strike for three months, which ended shutting down the production on not only “Desperate Housewives”, but all shows on television. And that was kind of a bummer, because a few more storylines had to be cut short. For example, there was a very funny storyline involving a gay male couple that moved to Wisteria Lane, and I think the writers originally had planned to expand this storyline throughout the season. But after the writer’s strike ended and there was only room for seven episodes, the writers couldn’t expand this storyline has they had planned. Whether or not this storyline will be expanded for season five remains to be seen.

And when season five debuts in the fall of 2008, it’ll be interesting to see what will be going on. In the final moments of the last episode of season four, the action flash forwards to five years later, which I presume is where the show will pick up when season five starts. And it’ll be interesting to see what’s going on, because “Desperate Housewives” leaves us dangling with another bizarre cliffhanger: who’s the man (and it’s not Mike) that’s kissing Susan in the final scene?

In season 4 of DH we see the show going back to the basics, to the thing that made fans love DH: the friendships. The friendships of Lynette, Susan, Bree and Gabrielle, as well as each individual character, were tested over and over again and they endured. It was this quality of enduring friendship amongst women that makes this show so good.

Season 3 dealt with each women independently, barely interacting with the other friends and thus we lost that which made the show worthwhile, their interactions. Season 4 takes another route and shows the women provide each other a strong support system. Lynette relies on her friends and family to go through cancer, Bree deals with faking a pregnancy, Susan must deal with her marriage with Mike and Gabrielle must decide between Carlos and Victor.

We also see the introduction of another character, Katherine Mayfair (and of course, her many secrets which deserve to be a character all of their own). She was such an excellent character that I instantly liked her, secrets and all. Katherine was a former resident of Wisteria Lane and a friend of Susan’s. She has a ton of secrets and a way to challenge each and everyone of our Wisteria Lane ladies.

Tornadoes, blackmail (tons of blackmail), ex-husbands, drugs, maniacs, and tons of humor. This is one of the best DH seasons to date.

In regards to the uneducated 2.35:1 zealot reviewer, as a Director of Photography, I can state unequivocally that 2001 is supposed to be in 2.20:1 aspect ratio. It was shot in 2.20:1. It was not shot in Cinemascope (or anamorphic Panavision), which is 2.35:1. It was shot with straight lenses in Super Panavision 70 (65mm negative, 70mm projection print with soundtrack). Super Panavision 70 is a 2.20:1 aspect ratio format. When you are watching a 70mm print in a theater you are watching 2.20:1, which was never as wide as the anamorphic formats. Learn your aspect ratios.

Not to mention the fact that Kubrick went to the extraordinary effort of exposing his special effects composite shots as successive passes on the original undeveloped 65mm negative (after it being held sometimes in refrigeration for up to a year or more waiting for the next pass) so that all the composite visual elements are first generation on the original camera negative, rather than the cheaper and more common optical composite dupe negative inserts. Amazing. That is why it looks as good as it does. No optical negative generations.

A Beautiful Film…and one of the best executions of the 70mm format ever.

A true Visual Masterpiece.

HA! Imagine that, I’m the first one to get to review one of the old classics! HA! Finally, today is my day.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Godzilla: King of the Monsters! Click Here

First of all, I like all these old monster movies, especially the really big monsters. Godzilla is somewhere between 300 and 400 feet tall (I got that from the dialogue in the movie), that constitutes BIG. So you can expect my review to be a half star to one star higher than most others.

So lets get with it. (I’m watching it again as I review it).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Godzilla: King of the Monsters! Click Here

PROS:

1. Stars Raymond Burr, that’s a star.

2. Great music, four notes on a piano and three notes on a clarinet–works just fine. That’s a star.

3. Special effects, everybody knows the Japanise did the best scaling on cities and toy cars and things than anybody else. Though you can in several scenes (where godzilla is jerking around) tell it’s just a man in a rubber suit…so what. It’s all shot in that great old Black and white film. They get a star.

4. The acting, directing, writing are just fine for an old popcorn movie, that’s a star.

5. The idea. That’s another star because of the way it is handled. A very big lizard is waken up, or resurrected, or frankensteined together, because of H Bomb Test. And what’s a big lizard to do when woke up from a 200 million year sleep?…go find the guys who did it and stomp their city to rubble. Yes sir, NOBODY does it better or equal to godzilla! The story starts off with Raymond Burr’s plane flying several miles above the ocean just as the big lizard decides to sink its first ship. He is questioned by the authorities–he was asleep and spends some part of the movie running around with the scientist and military as they try to figure out what is going one. It helps that godzilla stomps his way onto one of the islands late night and smashes a rather large village, small town. Of course it has to be the one Ramond is sleeping on. He doesn’t see the monster but everybody hears it coming. I guess the whole world knows THOSE foot steps. We don’t get to see it either except for the bottom part of its’ left leg. But that’s okay, the next time it comes stomping ashore it does so in full day light.

Welp…there’s no doubt now!

Yea know, godzilla has just about the same amount of respect for a military tank as a tornado does for a trailer…something about those two just don’t get along!

Moving along: There a few incidents, all of them seem well done, the scaling continues to be the best out there…no need for computer graphics in these old movies. They must have had background actors in the high hundreds to low thousands to shoot some of these scenes.

Well, I don’t want to giveaway all the story to those of you who have never seen this movie before–all three of you. I will say, it is a clean movie through and through. It is the stuff that used to give me nightmares when I was a young kid 45 or more years ago. Some of the scenes actually look real. I do recomment it to all the growing popcorn crowd and all of you who like to watch ‘old’ classics. For all the old giant monster type movies this is probably the best one to ever come from overseas.

CONS:

1. I could set here and pick this or any popcorn movie to pieces…but why do it? It is a fine movie. It is a monster movie. It is a BIG monster movie. I’ve seen better, I’ve seen worse. It is a BIG MONSTER movie that demands popcorn and soda. Remember, it is a classic and is the original godzilla from which all the others came from.

Buy, don’t rent the classics.

Bye!

Believe it or not, the answer to the question posed in the title is “Yes”. The movie, a Japanese production, was originally made in 1954. This edition was remade for an American audience in 1956 by using Raymond Burr as reporter Steve Martin. He serves as an on-scene reporter (and narrator) of the movie.

The film begins with Godzilla rising from the ocean floor, killing a number of peaceful Japanese fishermen. The historical parallel is to the real life radioactive contamination of 23 Japanese fishermen on the “Lucky Dragon 5″ fishing boat. The first two nuclear test explosions on the Bikini Atoll and the ocean surrounding the atoll were conducted in 1946 (learn more at my review of “Radio Bikini”). The fishermen were contaminated by a 1954 test in the same area.

Godzilla is a product of a nuclear explosion. Unleashed on Tokyo the destruction he reeks is as destructive as the fire bombing of Tokyo in WWII and, of course, the A-bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That is the point of the movie. In 1956 the Japanese were raising the question of what the unintended consequences of the use of the atomic bomb would be in the future. The movie’s answer: monstrous mutations like Godzilla.

After this movie the Godzilla monster retreated into standard monster fare. Later Godzilla movies were mostly a matter of finding another appropriate monstrous colossus to fight it. Raymond Burr’s performance is solid as usual. Everyone else in the movie is Japanese and dubbed in English.

One piece of trivia I found interesting is that Burr turned down the role when it was first offered to him because of time commitments. He was persuaded to take it when he was promised that he would only be required to work one day. The producers then made him work a straight 24 hours with only occasional breaks. Monstrous!

This one, of the whole Veggie Tales series, is my personal favorite. There’s a lot here to love. First, it teaches youngsters a valuable lesson about telling the truth both in its wholesome story and in the larger metaphor that first you control the lie but in time the lie controls you. Second, it’s amazingly clever in its dialogue and concept and design, from the Larrymobile with its suction cup wheels to the way Larry-Boy, always the consummate nerd, screams “I–AM–THAT–HERO! ” But best of all, adults can watch this video and be entertained as well as the kids, as the creators gleefully spoof Batman and superheros in general, bad sci-fi monster flicks, the Franklin Mint, pop culture and, in the final segment, music videos. All the Veggie Tales series are very funny, but this one makes you laugh so hard you’ll have to rewind it in spots to re-watch the stuff you missed while recovering from cracking up. This deserves to be a classic. If the gang from Big Idea had never made another video, we could remain forever grateful for this one. Of course, then we never could have heard “The Hairbrush Song”…

Larry the Cucumber and Bob the Tomato are again hosting another VeggieTales video, this time giving a lesson in telling the truth (John 8:32b “The truth will set you free”). The story begins in the small town of Brumblyburgwhere Jerry and Jimmy are ’supposed’ to be monitoring the area for aliens. And when an ‘unidentified object’ lands, it’s up to Larry-Boy (aka Larry the Cucumber) to find out what it is. But Junior Asparagus is the first one to find it; it’s an alien called Fib. And when Junior gets into some trouble, Fib gives him the perfect solution; to tell a little lie which of course wouldn’t hurt anybody! Junior soon finds out that his little friend can become a HUGE problem! It’s up to Larry-Boy and his Larry-Boy Mobile to save the day… if everything goes well…

Totally hilarious, I find this Veggie Tale to be thoroughly enjoying. With great Christian values, they’re perfect for kids, teenagers, and even have adults interested with the wry humor, catchy and fun songs, and terrific animation and plot.

This tape is especially hilarious, from the very first part where Larry-Boy explains to Bob how times are changing and that he’ll be ‘left behind’. Then comes the joke about ‘The Invasions of the Cow-Snatchers” which just cracked me up! Then the way they make fun of batman with the light in the sky… and I could go on! I especially love it when Larry-Boy’s ‘butler’ yells to the computer, “BOOT!” Then of course Larry-Boy himself is so funny, with his ’super suction-cups’. The world premier of “Larry-Boy’s Music Video” is simply hilarious and very catchy. I keep singing, “Lean, mean, green machine. Larry-boy!” The song is sung fantastically by Christian music artist Nicole Mullen. And I mean it when I say she sang fantastically, she has a terrific voice!

If you liked this VeggieTale, don’t miss out on “King George and the Ducky”, “Lyle the Kindly Viking”, and “The Ultimate Silly Songs Countdown”, three of which are my favorites.

David Cronenberg takes chances and his pushing the edge of cinematic art is what makes his films so interesting. JG Ballard’s controversial novel CRASH seemed an unlikely prospect for a film, so dark were its explorations of the outer zones of excitation and their relationship to near-death events. But Cronenberg worked through making Ballard’s visions visual and his screenplay based on Ballard’s book is more about interior dialogue and visceral sexual encounters as they relate to trauma.

James Ballard (James Spader) is a successful TV director who spends as much time as a lothario as he does making film. He is married to Catherine (Deborah Kara Unger) whose own sexuality leads her into stray paths. The two seem to connect physically but the fire is diminishing: they both concur that encounters with other partners enhance their sexual experiences. James is in a car accident and survives with a broken leg and scars, but the other car’s male driver was killed and his surviving female companion Helen Remington (Holly Hunter) is hospitalized with James. While in the hospital both encounter a strange, scarred, limping male photographer Vaughn (Elias Koteas) who takes photos of the scars and trauma results of both James and Helen. Catherine visits James in the hospital and seems to find excitement in the scars and orthopedic paraphernalia binding her husband.

Once James is released from the hospital he is strangely drawn to the car he wrecked and finds Helen in the same mindset. The two move into physical attraction as well as an emotional attraction to Vaughn. Vaughn is obsessed with auto accidents, having been in many, and he stages famous car accidents (James Dean, Jayne Mansfield, etc) for a captive audience – which includes James, Helen, and Catherine. Vaughn insidiously draws the three into his obsession, sharing his ‘actors’ and fellow travelers – including Gabrielle (Rosanna Arquette – with both legs in orthopedic mechanisms), Colin and Vera Seagrave (Peter MacNeill and Cheryl Swarts) and those who help him stage his ‘accidents’. Vaughn explains that he is exploring how to achieve that sensation of terror one feels during a car crash and equate it with orgasm. The odd group of folks all sexually interact with abandon: the crashed car becomes the bedchamber for bizarre sexual acting out. And how this all plays out in the end is the part of the film that simply must be seen to feel the experience.

This is clearly NOT a movie for everyone. The CD contains both the NC and the R rated version: I watched the NC version and while it is graphic and focused on sex it is oddly uninvolving emotionally – we care little about the people we meet. Perhaps part of the story here is that with the progressively dehumanization of man in his symbiotic relationship with machines, relating to fellow humans on anything except the sensual gratification is something we are losing. That is the kind of powerful statement Cronenberg shows us with these passionate yet cold people. The cast is exceptional, especially Koteas whose warped character is wholly three-dimensional as opposed to the oddly uninvolved characters Spader, Unger, and Hunter portray. A dizzying experience! Grady Harp, October 05

“Censors tend to do what only psychotics do… they confuse reality with illusion…I don’t have a moral plan. I’m a Canadian.” These are the words of visionary film maker, David Cronenberg, director of Videodrome, The Fly, Naked Lunch, Rabid and Dead Ringers. Here we’re going to examine his film ‘Crash’, from the 1973 novel from J.G. Ballard. Crash debuted at Cannes in 1996, and won many awards over the next year or so.

Although not XXX smut, this film is one of the most eerily erotic movies of the past decade. The eroticism starts from the very first scene, Deborah Kara Unger standing in front of a small airplane in a hanger. The way she purposefully takes her breast out of her bra, leans over and allows the nipple to kiss the cool metal of the plane, and then receives a man, identity unseen, entering her from the rear bent over the machine… in many ways the subtle sensualities set the viewer’s mind set to observe the rest of the movie.

Cut to a scene of James Spader, shagging the camera girl in the back room of a studio set. On arrival home, Unger and Spader casually and respectfully debrief each other – more worshipful listening than interrogation. Shortly, however, the violence central to the film arrives, with Spader driving alone, distracted, and swerving off the road and head on into a car. He is injured and thrown into shock – the other driver is ejected and shot like a rocket headfirst through Spader’s windshield, dead. Looking up, Spader notices the passenger of the other car, Holly Hunter, inadvertently revealing a breast as she tries to free herself from her seat belt. The juxtapositions continue.

Thrown together by the accident of machine and fate, Hunter and Spader meet again in the hospital, and yet again – more fatefully – at the impound yard. Both arriving as if compelled, they find themselves driving together in a car identical to the one Spader crashed, they nearly crash again, and go immediately by almost unspoken simultaneous agreement to a public garage where they make love within the car.

An odd man who investigates and recreates famous automobile crashes, played by Elias Koteas, introduces Spader & Hunter to an esoteric private club. They recreate the death crash of James Dean’s Porche … same car, same lack of seat belt, all the details, regardless of the risk to the recreators. We also meet Rosanna Arquette, large metallic braces covering her black lace outfits, crippled and yet embracing her own sexuality fully. And we move on, slipping down a slope, into every combination of sexual encounter between the girls, the boys, the girls and boys, all intertwined with the violence of the ultimate urban technology. Gender soon means less than the context of the paraphilia. And curiously, most of the sex is rear entry, not facing each other, distanced as it is coupled.

In your heart of hearts, you’ll realize at some point in this film that there is something about your own sexuality, something whether deeply hidden or not, that is every bit as potentially pathological as these folks. The difference in many cases is simply whether or not it interferes with your life or if you can incorporate it into your accepted fetishes and continue on with job, family, and all.

“It’s a dangerous film in many ways,” Cronenberg said. “Everyone in the film is both afraid of and excited by the challenge of exploring society’s fascination and our personal fascination with technology and sexuality.” Critics split widely on the film internationally, with Roger Ebert stating “It left me wishing somebody would take this much effort to make a film about the kinds of things that turn ME on.”

I recommend it. Take a chance, and see how much you can identify with yourself. You don’t have to tell anyone what you decide.
